Another post this week? Really!? Yea, I asked myself the same question. But, yes. Really. Another post! And another personal post at that. When my husband and I bought a new house a few months ago, I was giddy with excitement. So many projects and ideas flooded my mind. Only seven months after packing up all of our belongings and moving ACROSS THE COUNTRY, then unpacking… here we were, packing it all back up again. This time, we were only moving nine blocks. Nine. loooong. blocks.
Nonetheless, we got it all here and the unpacking began. And kept going. And going. And going. Like the Energizer Bunny, I am still – to this day – working on unpacking boxes. You see, what we failed to consider was that we both were on “vacation” for the first six weeks we lived here [the first time we moved] – having pleeeeeenty of time to leisurely unpack, settle, and play. This time? Not so much. Plus, not only were we unpacking, but we were unpacking into a home with things that needed to be done to it first. Oy.
First up was the kitchen. When we arrived we were greeted by a wood-and-cream toned kitchen with a fridge that would rival most dorm refrigerators. So let me just say here that, uhhh, city livin’ is simple, but not that simple. Priority one: Restructure cabinets & buy new fridge. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to dig up the image of the ORIGINAL kitchen. But after our cabinet/fridge fix (and installing our “adult-size” double-door super fridge), I decided it was time to tackle the cabinets.

Much research later, I invested in $40/gallon primer, high-quality white paint, and semi-gloss lacquer coating. And then I spent FIVE DAYS trying to paint FIVE cabinets. Honestly. Our kitchen is so small – and thus the fumes so strong – that I painted them, one coat at a time. But little by little, they became this.

Sidenote: In an effort to be “real” I did no cleaning of the kitchen for these images.
Well, we’re going to pretend that’s the reason I did no cleaning, at least.
Of course, this is by no means a completed project. We still have counters to replace, walls to be painted [I'm begging the husband for some icy blue influence], an oven to be replaced. Oh yea, and did I mention we have been microwave-less for two months now? It’s not as hard as it sounds, actually, but I am optimistic that we have one in our near future.
So, what about you? Have you ever embarked on a project that was 8038236 times more altering than you thought it would be? I’m convinced I just made the kitchen look ten years younger. Or at least not so much from the 80s.
